Brown, Capt. of the Arkansas, dated 23 Jul 1862, where William Dills was one of six killed in the Arkansas' encounter with the Union ram Essex on 22 Jul 1862; ORN I-19, pg. 70; Smith, The CSS Arkansas, pg. 250, where two volunteers from the 3rd Kentucky Regiment died instantly. [From the table of crew and the date of 22 Jul, these two appear to be William Dills #53 and W. Woodward #36.]
